One Good Movie - Skip Trace

A newsletter for movie lovers with taste but not much time.

Hi friend,

After an injury, a former professional football player becomes a bounty hunter in the underbelly of 1970s Los Angeles.

Need more information? I didn’t think so.

Isaac Hayes stars as Mack “Truck” Turner in this neo-noir blaxploitation bash.

Turner hunts down a pimp named Gator in a world not far from Elmore Leonard and George V. Higgins.

Bar-room brawls? Check.
Violent shootouts? Check.
Car chases? Check.

The cast includes Yaphet Kotto, Paul Harris, Dick Miller, and Scatman Crothers.

Directed by Jonathan Kaplan, who later helmed Over the Edge.

Hayes also did the music.

A raw, gritty, jocular 91 minutes.

Epilogue

In addition to last month’s Late Night with the Devil, I enjoyed the elegantly photographed The First Omen. The film remixes countless tropes into an unsettling modern take on female body horror.

It’s the first feature by Arkasha Stevenson. She’s a talent.
