One Good Movie - Thorne Rooms
A weekly newsletter for movie lovers with taste but not much time.
Hi friend,
Wes Anderson has a movie in theaters.
You should go.
Can’t get out of the house? Watch The French Dispatch.
Asteroid City is charming and dense, but I connected more with his previous feature. Dispatch is underrated and lost its audience because of the pandemic. But anthology films are tricky (see Creepshow 2).
I don’t love Anderson the way I love John Carpenter. Yet, like Carpenter, I value how Anderson keeps refining his craft and making variations of the same film over and over.
I admire Anderson for doubling down on his Thorne Rooms precision. His humor, appreciation of a turn of phrase, and mastery of mise-en-scène continue to astonish.

Epilogue
Jamie Foxx keeps taking that Netflix money. I look forward to this one.
Chicago
Orson Welles adored the Thorne Rooms at the Art Institute of Chicago. Anderson turns those rooms into flickering life with his films.
