One Good Movie - Murphy

A weekly newsletter for movie lovers with taste but not much time.

Hi friend,

I saw Barbie on Saturday.

Greta Gerwig announces her directorial authority with a big-budget studio movie about plastic dolls.

We live in crazy times.

Barbie completes Gerwig’s female self-discovery trilogy. Art and commerce collide in a technicolor fantasy that incorporates a show-stopping musical number.

Gerwig’s achievement reminded me of another transformative story by an auteur who started with smaller, art films and then transitioned to Hollywood summer fare that still retained a singular voice.

Like Barbie, it’s a tale of rebirth and resurrection while satirizing American consumerism, sexism, and military lust.

And while Barbie stumbles minorly, this week’s film is perfect.

Paul Verhoeven.

1987.

102 minutes.

Guns, guns, guns!
