One Good Movie - Masterful Idiots

A weekly newsletter for movie lovers with taste but not much time.

Hey friend,When it comes to picking a movie to watch in my household, I always want to watch horror films and Mrs. One Good Movie does not.

Fortunately, we both enjoy movies starring Liam Neeson, Ashley Judd, or spies. The spy genre makes for terrific visual vehicles that don't need to aspire to great art. And there is a vast catalog of films available of varying tones, from grim Cold War thrillers to Bush-era comedies about idiots. This week's movie is by perhaps the two greatest American filmmakers post-1970. In terms of a body of work, it's difficult to cite superior creators.

Intellectual Jews from Minnesota who make movies about idiots. There is a peerless precision to their filmmaking craft.

And this week's movie feels taken for granted. It was a success when it came out, but is funnier on repeated viewings.

Major movie stars. A convoluted thriller plot in service of comedy. And a bombastic score that underlines the silly self-seriousness.

Sadly, the Coen Brothers are no longer working in tandem.

But we will always have Chad Feldheimer.
