One Good Movie - 80's Female Action

A weekly newsletter for movie lovers with taste but not much time.

Hey friend,

Michelle Yeoh won the Oscar for Best Actress on Sunday. It’s a solid performance in an okay movie. My filmmaker friend put it best when describing Everything as “middle-brow” weird. Its eccentricities jump between funny and derivative. If the movie had come out in 1999, perhaps it would feel more like a revelation.

Also, Margot Robbie should have been nominated for Babylon. The film has three knockout sequences, and Robbie's talents are central to their success. It’s a big movie; she gives a big performance and she delivers. Sadly those exceptional set pieces can’t overcome Babylon's bloat.

Nevertheless, Michelle Yeoh rules. She deserves all the accolades.

Her first starring role is the 1985 Hong Kong action film and this week's movie:

Yeoh initially trained as a dancer, but fortunately for us, her masterful legs were put to better use kicking ass onscreen.

She plays Inspector Ng. There’s microfilm. There are bad guys. Enough said.

Yeoh is paired with Cynthia Rothrock, in her screen debut. Rothrock became a staple of B-movie martial arts films. Even her name lands like a punch to the face!

Together Yeoh and Rothrock fight criminals and persistent sexism.

It’s also a buffet of 80’s fashion and hair.

93 minutes.

Dubbed.

An action classic.
