One Good Movie 10

A weekly newsletter for movie lovers with taste but not much time.

Hey friend,

Hear me out on this one. It's an abortion movie.

But unlike many films about sensitive topics, this isn’t an essay.

It's a thriller.

It's not preachy or overly dramatic. It shines with specificity and character.

Writer/director Eliza Hittman crafts a detailed procedural like Michael Mann. Instead of a thief trying to perform a big score, her protagonist must obtain an abortion.

Okay, sounds like a fun Friday night movie, right?

Maybe not, but it's my favorite film of 2020. Like all great thrillers, it will hold you in your seat as it takes you further and further into its world.

Hittman's work is thoroughly researched. Her visuals intimate and precise. First-time actress Sidney Flanigan captivates.

Save morality debates for the pundits and the pulpit.

This movie is all about procedure. All about the process. And buried in that process is human emotion.

The ticking clock is biological.

Let me know what you think.

Epilogue

One of the challenges with recommendations is that many of the films I want to share are unavailable on streaming.

For all the Netflixes, Amazons, and Apples of the world, thousands of films remain lost to physical media or have never been made available anywhere beyond a film print or television.

If you're unfamiliar, Justwatch.com is my go-to site for finding films on streaming.

If you know of a better resource, please reply to this email.

Not Quite A Jet Pack

My city started renting electric bikes. It's a €1 for the first 30 minutes and €15 for 24 hours. I plan on taking a ride to the beach.
